Working Equitation

At Harmony N Horsemanship, we believe Working Equitation is more than a sport. It is a practical pathway to developing trust, communication and harmony between horse and rider. Our focus is on creating confident horses, capable riders and partnerships built on understanding rather than force.

What Is Working Equitation?

Horsemanship With Purpose

Working Equitation (WE) is a discipline rooted in the traditional working horse cultures of Europe and the Iberian Peninsula — Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. It was born from the practical demands of working cattle on horseback, where a horse needed to be light, responsive, and genuinely useful.

Today, WE is a recognised international sport that combines four phases: dressage, ease of handling (obstacles), speed handling, and at higher levels, cattle work. It rewards harmony, lightness, and genuine partnership — not just technical precision.

Why Working Equitation?

Why It Benefits Every Horse

Whether your horse is a seasoned competitor or has never seen an obstacle in its life, Working Equitation training has something to offer. Here's why we recommend it for horses of all types and backgrounds.

Develops True Responsiveness

The varied demands of WE — from precise dressage to navigating obstacles — build a horse that is light, attentive, and genuinely responsive to the rider's aids.

Builds Confidence & Calmness

Regular exposure to obstacles, unusual objects, and varied environments teaches horses to think rather than react — producing calmer, more confident horses in all situations.

Develops the Whole Horse

WE training engages the horse mentally and physically. It develops suppleness, balance, and collection through dressage, while obstacle work sharpens focus and problem-solving.

Strengthens the Partnership

Working through challenges together — a tricky gate, a narrow bridge, a water obstacle — deepens the trust and communication between horse and rider in a way few disciplines can.

Horse Training

Training Your Horse for Working Equitation

Before a horse can perform confidently in Working Equitation, it needs a solid foundation — softness, responsiveness, and the willingness to try. That's where our horse training comes in.

We work with horses at every stage: young horses being started, horses needing to develop more lightness and collection for dressage, and horses that need confidence and desensitisation work before they're ready for obstacles.

Our approach is always patient and progressive — we never rush a horse through a phase it isn't ready for. The result is a horse that is genuinely prepared, not just pushed through the motions.

The Obstacles

What You'll Encounter

Working Equitation obstacles are drawn from traditional rural horsemanship — practical tasks that test real partnership between horse and rider. Each one is a conversation.

1

Gate

Open, pass through, and close a gate without dismounting — a true test of one-handed riding and horse responsiveness.

2

Bridge

Walk calmly over a raised wooden bridge, building confidence and trust in unfamiliar footing.

3

Water

Enter and move through a water obstacle — a classic confidence-builder for horse and rider alike.

4

Slalom & Barrels

Navigate a series of markers or barrels with precision, demonstrating lateral suppleness and rider accuracy.

5

Reinback Through Poles

Back the horse through a defined corridor — requiring softness, straightness, and clear communication.

6

Bull Pen & Cattle (Higher Levels)

At advanced levels, riders work with cattle — sorting and handling livestock as a true working horse partnership.

Confidence Building

Building Confidence in Horse & Rider

One of the most powerful things about Working Equitation is what it does for confidence — in both horse and rider. Navigating obstacles together, solving problems, and succeeding as a team creates a bond and a belief that carries into every other area of your riding.

For nervous horses, the progressive introduction to obstacles — at their own pace, without pressure — teaches them to think rather than react. Over time, horses that once spooked at a plastic bag learn to walk calmly over bridges and through water.

For riders, the clear, achievable goals of WE training provide a framework for growth. Each obstacle mastered is a genuine milestone — and the confidence that builds in the arena translates directly to trail riding, paddock work, and everyday handling.

For the Nervous Horse

Progressive, pressure-free introduction to obstacles builds genuine calmness and trust — not just tolerance.

For the Rider

Clear goals, measurable progress, and the satisfaction of working as a true team with your horse.

For the Partnership

Shared challenges deepen communication and trust in ways that flat work alone cannot replicate.

Competition Pathways

From First Start to Advanced Competition

Working Equitation has a clear, welcoming competition pathway — from introductory classes right through to advanced levels with cattle work. You don't have to compete to enjoy WE, but if you want to, there's a clear path forward.

Level 1

Introductory

Perfect for first-time competitors. Simple dressage test and a small selection of obstacles at walk and trot. Open to all breeds and ages.

Level 2

Novice

Builds on introductory with a more complete obstacle course and slightly more demanding dressage. A great stepping stone into the sport.

Level 3

Intermediate

Canter work introduced across dressage and obstacles. Riders demonstrate greater precision, collection, and partnership.

Level 4

Advanced

Full competition format including dressage, ease of handling, speed handling, and cattle work. The complete Working Equitation experience.

Working Equitation in Australia is governed by Working Equitation Australia (WEA). Competitions are held across the country and are open to all breeds and riding styles. We can help you understand the pathway and prepare for your first competition.
